I love BBQ, and the more authentic, the better. You won't see me asking for a condiment bar; but then, I don't believe that good bbq is necessarily linked only with dives. Southern Comfort Cuisine in Milpitas, CA is a perfect example. You will find the family's background tied to Louisiana through the owner's wife's family, and Texas through the owner's family. This means that the delicious sides and fried chicken come from Louisiana, while many of the BBQ meats, like brisket are barbequed low and slow with seasoning from Texas. Even though the outside looks as basic as you can get, the inside is very nice, with full bar, simple white table cloths, African American clothing on the walls, with warm jazz playing during the day, and very good live entertainment at nights from Thursday through Sunday. The fried chicken is light and crispy, and nicely seasoned. It's made right then (this ain't Kentucky fried that sits around for hours). The combo plate is a great deal. You get chicken, brisket and ribs. The brisket is lean and delicate, and the ribs stay on the bone only long enough for you to bite into them. The sauce, which you can ask for on the side, is not anything like anywhere else. It simply is not the tomatoe based or vinegar based stuff. It is original, as their site suggests and truly delicious. We had several people in the restaurant who agreed. It is obviously an old family recipe that is derived from the sauce of the meats. I've made greens many times, which I let put in a broth of my own smoked ham hock or smoked turkey wing. But I just can't get them to taste seasoned like this. I found that they too cook it in a broth seasoned with smoked meats, and you will find the smoked meat in the greens. And unlike some place like Memphis Minnie's, where you are the greens are vinegar first, everything second, this comes from a family that truly knows greens. This is not a place that is out of a bbq book. Instead, it is soul food first, comfort food, and it is cooked low and slow with much family concern for a first rate place.
